  10. admin Says:

@David and Douwe – The e-mail client that you use has to support VB scripts, which as far as I know, Outlook is the only client on the market that does.
@Justin and Bobby – Like Michael said, to shutdown and restart, just change the “-s” to “-r” in the batch file.

have you looked into outlook (VBA) macro’s to use outlook to retrieve files remotely.. saw a blog with a how-to some where else.. probably more useful, but both seem very cool all the same!

@travisn000 – I think you’re talking about this article: http://tech.shantanugoel.com/projects/windows/remote-file-access-through-e-mail. I was intrigued by that as well, but it requires a lot more coding than what would fit in a 5 minute video…I tried it :-) There are a plethora of things you can do with this functionality. The skies the limit!

I don’t think it’s quite compatible with Outlook Express. When it comes to setting new rules for the incoming messages, Express doesn’t offer quite the same options and rules compared to regular Outlook. At least from what I can tell. Anybody with some pointers to help get Express to work would be great. Thanks.

Hey, is their anyway to make it hibernate instead?

    comment-bottom
  34. admin Says:

@Joe – no it’s not compatible with outlook express. It is, however, compatible with Thunderbird, if you want to try using that, it’s free.

@Brad – yeah, just google “hibernate from command prompt” and replace the shutdown command with the hibernate command.

The use of Kwiry is not necessary for this hack. Just send the text message DIRECTLY

    comment-bottom
  43. Cplus Says:

to your gmail (or other email) account. Is the purpose of this trick to get people to sign up with Kwiry so they can monitor interests?

    comment-bottom
  44. admin Says:

@Cplus – People that do not have web enabled cell phones cannot send a message directly to your e-mail account. Text messages do not allow communication with e-mail accounts. Try it. That’s the purpose of Kwiry. I have no stake in their service other than it can take a text message and convert it to e-mail. There are a couple other different services like that, so take your pick, but you can’t send a text message to an e-mail address.

    comment-bottom
  45. Cplus Says:

“but you can’t send a text message to an e-mail address.”

I’m using this cool hack without involving any other services by sending a simple text message directly to my gmail address. You should try it yourself. The only phone I found so far unable to txt directly to an email account is a prepaid tracfone. My prepaid Verizon phone sends txt to email addresses no problemo. Did you know that by having a cellphone you now have another email address? for instance: If you have a verizon phone number, I can send you a txt FROM my gmail or any other email address by simply emailing you at XXXXXXXXXX@vtxt.com (where xxxxxxxxxx is your area code and celcell number

    comment-bottom
  46. Cplus Says:

In most cases there will be no need for another service (like Kwiry) for an individual to enjoy this fun cool “hack”. Text and email are virtually interchangeable. Send a picture message to an email account instead of someone’s phone so that they can see the image better… etc. This has been the case for a long time.

“People that do not have web enabled cell phones cannot send a message directly to your e-mail account.”

-This is simply NOT completely true.

    comment-bottom
  47. Cplus Says:

Also, here is my current status with Kwiry. There is NOT a link on their sight from within my signed on account where I can cancel the account. So, I’ve manually sent them a request to cancel. They reply after a couple days that if I want to cancel my account to reply to their email by saying that I want to cancel. I replied by saying again, “Please cancel my account assosciated with my email address.” SO again today, I get the same message from them telling me that if i want to cancel that i need to reply saying so. so now im in some kind of email reply loop. That is lame and a waste of my time. Readers of this blog be warned and read my above suggesstions before signing up with Kwiry.

    comment-bottom
  48. Cplus Says:

Oops, to send a message from email to a verizon cell phone the address is

    xxxxxxxxxx@vtext.com NOT xxxxxxxxxx@vtxt.com

I just tested this to make sure again. it works. it has worked for a couple years. tmobile, att and others have their own specific domain you must use but it’s generally the same thing.

    - Does anyone know how to do this using Thunderbird?

Can be done using the Mailbox Alert 0.13.1 plug-in

    comment-bottom
  53. Mike Z Says:

    Thunderbird:

    install plug-in

    create ShutDown folder

configure message filters to place messages with “… shutdown” in subject into “ShutDown” folder

highlight ShutDown folder and go to Tools -> Mailbox Alert Preferences

this will give you an option to run a file or play a sound, etc when a new object is placed in the folder

    comment-bottom
  62. admin Says:

@Trausti – I chose kwiry because it forwarded text messages to e-mail. If you can send e-mail directly from your phone, then you can do it that way as well. Or, you may be able to find another web-based service that performs the same function…maybe some type of reminder service.
